The Antillean manatee is among the more mysterious manatees, or commonly called “sea cows”. These gentle giants are an endangered species, which makes what Jamal and his team are doing so important.

Belize is the most important habitat and ecosystem for these manatees. You can find manatees along Belize’s coast, where they swim in rivers, lakes, and lagoons, as well as in coastal marine environments, including seagrass, mangrove, and coral reef ecosystems.
These environments provide a critical system of pathways that manatees use to access the different places where they eat, drink, rest, mate, and nurse their young.

Jamal Galves, the “Manatee Man,” is a true Belizean Hero! As one of the leading biologists and Manatee experts in Belize, Jamal Galves is committed to conservation efforts to help the endangered Manatees.
Jamal Galves was 11 years old when he first started with manatees in the Belize town of Gales Point. Today, he is the Belize Manatee Conservation program coordinator with Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Also a recipient of the WWF Planetary Hero, and a National Geographic Explorer.
Jamal Glaves goes above and beyond the call of duty to protect the manatees in Belize. Jamal has a strong connection to and passion for helping protect these gentle giants. Jamal is more than the Manatee Man in Belize; Jamal is an exceptional community leader.
He is always advocating for the protection of Belize’s manatees, marine environment, and our barrier reef. Jamal is truly a role model and an inspiration to many Belizean people, and is an example of a real HERO!
