We’ve seen it all, and we want to help you avoid the common mistakes that travelers can make when visiting Belize.
Traveling to Belize for the first time is amazing, and the country and experience WOWs those who visit. Belize is a unique destination with incredible experiences, but like any destination, there are common “rookie” mistakes that tourists encounter.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the common mistakes travelers make when visiting Belize:
- Expecting an All-Inclusive Experience: Belize doesn’t have many all-inclusive resorts like other tropical destinations (e.g., Mexico or the Dominican Republic). Instead of an all-inclusive getaway, travelers to Belize enjoy a more boutique experience.
- Data Packages & SIM Cards: Neglecting a Local SIM Card or not having Data Roaming is a common mistake. Acquiring a SIM from Digicell or Smart is recommended to ensure reasonable connectivity rates.
- Ignoring Local Food & Cuisine: Travelers should not solely rely on upscale restaurants or fast food. Many travellers will stay in the resort and miss out on the fantastic food and restaurants in Belize. Travellers are recommended to embrace and try local dining options, including street vendors and small eateries, that offer a real taste of Belize’s culinary delights.
- Overlooking Expiration Dates in Stores: Unlike grocery stores in North America or Europe, products in Belize may not be as rigorously checked for expiration. Visitors should be vigilant about checking expiration dates, especially on imported goods, and prefer fresh, local products.
- Assuming Belize is Cheap: Although Belize might seem less expensive compared to places like LA or New York, it’s important to note that it is not one of the cheapest destinations, especially compared to Southeast Asia or Mexico. Budgeting appropriately and seeking local options can help mitigate costs.
- Misunderstanding the Nightlife Scene: While there are bars and some clubs, the nightlife is quieter than visitors expect. Visitors should plan their evenings accordingly, knowing that many venues have earlier closing times of 12 am to 2 am.
- Forgetting Passport Stamps: After 30 days in Belize, visitors need to get their passports stamped for an extension.
- Mosquito Repellant: Mosquitoes are part of the Caribbean and tropics, especially during certain times of the year (August, September, October). Nature comes with its share of bugs, especially during the rainy season. Most mosquitoes appear at dawn and dusk. Being mindful of this can help travelers.
- Assuming Easy Employment: Obtaining a work permit to take a job that a local could do is challenging. Instead, the host encourages seeking ways to integrate into the local economy, such as starting a business.
- Banks & Acquiring Financing: Setting up a bank account or obtaining a mortgage in Belize can be challenging. Travelers interested in investing in property often look at seller or vendor financing options.
