Belize’s Prime Minister, Johnny Briceño, proposed the extension of Mexico’s Maya Train into Belize in January 2025. This proposal, submitted to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, aims to connect Quintana Roo in Mexico to Belize, eventually extending to Guatemala.

The project will be executed in two stages: the first will link southern Quintana Roo to the Belize border, while the second will extend the railway into Belize, reaching iconic tourist destinations such as the Tikal ruins.

Prime Minister Briceño sees the project as a major boost for tourism and trade, attracting tourists from Cancun and improving trade routes between Belize and Mexico.

Briceño hopes this expansion will bring significant economic benefits and regional development for Belize.
